Brookhaven Retreat Celebrates National Women?s Health Week

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

This year the week of May 13-19 is National Women?s Health Week. Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services? Office of Women?s Health, it is a week used as the opportunity to promote women?s health. The theme for 2012 is ?It?s Your Time.? The goal of this week is to motivate women to make their health a top priority. National Women?s Health Week also provides women with five steps to help maintain their physical and mental health and lower the risks of certain diseases. The five steps that are advised are:

Visit a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventative screenings.
Get active
Eat healthy
Pay attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress.
Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt of bicycle helmet.

Women often are the caregivers and they place the needs of their family or loved ones before themselves. Consequently, this can cause their health and well-being to become secondary. This week allows for everyone to support the significant women in their lives and to help encourage them to make their health a priority.

Brookhaven Retreat is a facility that is dedicated to the emotional restoration of women and developing the coping skills and life skills that are necessary to manage the demands of life and the adjustment of distorted thinking which can arise from the concealment of negative experiences.

On Friday May 18, 2012, to celebrate National Women?s Health Week, Brookhaven Retreat conducted a walk around the facility?s grounds and also a Health Habits lunch.

Brookhaven Retreat is proud to be a facility that specializes in helping women and National Women?s Health Week gives them the chance to recognize the importance in not only what they do as women for women at their facility, but to encourage all women to maintain their health and mental well-being.

Tips to Help Prevent Sticking on Stainless Steel Cookware

Plantation, FL (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

When making the change from non-stick pans to food safe cookware, stainless steel cookware is often a first choice. However, one thing that has families hesitating to switch, is the perceived challenge of food sticking and ruining the pans. To help ease this ?fear,? Essential Safe Products (ESP) is sharing some useful tips on how to prevent sticking on stainless steel cookware. With these tips you can help keep your stainless steel cookware clean, keep harmful chemicals out of your food, and enjoy a much more flavorful meal.

Three tips to keep in mind before you being cooking:

1. Be patient. Cooking in stainless steel cookware does take extra time since you want to prevent food from sticking, but it is worth the extra few minutes. Your food will be much more flavorful and retain its natural juices.

2. Don?t cook above Medium heat. The exact temperature you cook at depends on the type of food, but a general rule to keep in mind is to never cook above Medium heat.

3. Flip once. Try to keep the flipping at a minimum when cooking. The less you flip the food, the less likely your food will stick.

Simple Steps to Help Prevent Sticking:

1. Preheat your pan on a low or medium heat for one to two minutes (or once it has reached the desired temperature). A good way to test if the pan is warm enough is to tap the side of the pan. If it feels hot, it?s ready.

2. Pour 2-3 teaspoons (or enough to just cover the bottom of the cooking surface) of olive oil in the preheated pan.

3. Instantly add your food to the pan. When you place the food on the pan, you should hear a sizzling sound. If the sound is more of a crackle or popping, the temperature is probably too high. The ?sizzling? sound is an indicator that your food is cooking on contact and creating a natural barrier to help prevent sticking?and this barrier helps hold in natural juices! (Here it can take some practice to figure out the best temperature to cook your food at. Different foods ?sizzle? at different temperatures.)

4. Allow your food to cook on the one side until the correct or desired ?doneness? is reached. The fewer number of times you flip your food, the less likely it will stick to the pan. When you lift the food to flip, tilt the pan with your free hand to help spread the olive oil around again.

5. Once the food is thoroughly cooked, enjoy!

La Peer Doctor Raises Money For A Hospital In Cambodia

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 04, 2012

Dr. Calvin Johnson, an anesthesiologist at La Peer Health Systems in Beverly Hills is making time to play 12 hours of basketball to raise funds for the Sihanouk Center of HOPE Hospital in Cambodia.

The fundraising basketball marathon is called, ?Play For A Purpose ? Hoops 4 Hope? sponsored by Hope World Wide. The basketball marathon is being held May 26, 2012 in Pasadena, California. Hope World Wide is fundraising to support the procurement of new medical equipment and the operation of a new hospital and Pediatric Center in the coastal southern region of Kampot, Cambodia.

Hope World Wide (HOPEWW.org) hopes to replicate the procurement of the Sihanouk Hospital Center (SHCH), which opened over 15 years ago. The SHCH provides more than 65,000 freepatient consultations a year and treated their 1,000,000th patient in November 2009.

The Cambodian locals refer to SHCH as the ?Angel Hospital? because of its reputation to help very ill people find treatment, to get healed and to be sent back home to their family alive. SHCH has become the most sought after institution for medical training and is the most active adult hospital in Cambodian.

In January 2012, the SHCH celebrated the opening of a new Women?s Health Center (WHC) to provide health check-ups for women of all ages. 86% of the patients who are treated at SHCH come from a rural province, and 68% of those patients are women. Too many women come to the hospital in pain and are hopeless to get treatment, only to be told that they have a few months to live because their cancer is highly advanced and irreversible. The new WHC facility hopes to end this and provides treatment to womenof all ages and aggressively takes a preventative medical care roll with annual checkups regardless if the women are able to pay.

La Peer?s Dr. Johnson has been a medical care volunteer, providing financial support and teaching with the SHCH for the last 14 years. Dr. Johnson?s writes on his fundraising page, ?[SHCH] It has changed my life; and with your donation you can save the life of a Cambodian Child, mother, and father!?

If you?d like to learn more about volunteering, sponsorship or fundraising opportunities at HOPE worldwide, please visit their website HOPEWW.org.

La Peer Health Systems, located in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles county, focuses on excellence in patient care and offers the most advanced and contemporary treatments and equipment that the medical world has access to. Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Shifts Focus to Business of Healthcare

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School has reorganized to focus its degree programs on the study of business issues related to healthcare and the life sciences, Interim Dean Phillip Phan has announced.

?We?re making this move not just because we are Johns Hopkins, with the best medical institutions in the world, but also because health care is an increasingly important part of the economic discussion in the United States,? said Phan. ?Health care is approaching 20 percent of the national gross domestic product, and it?s a key factor in the costs of any economic model, whether in manufacturing or services. Understanding the complexities of the modern health care industry is a crucial skill for any business manager. For those who manage in the healthcare sector, Hopkins is the place to learn.?

To guide the reorganization, Phan has appointed Carey Business School Associate Professor Toby Gordon as Faculty Director of the Healthcare and Life Sciences Programs. Gordon, who holds a doctor of science degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has taught in the schools of public health, medicine, and business at Johns Hopkins since 1983. Her decades of experience in the university?s health system include positions as administrator of surgical sciences and vice president of strategy and market research.

?A number of business programs related to healthcare and life sciences have been in place at Carey over the past several years,? said Gordon. ?But more recently we?ve decided, with the support of schools across Johns Hopkins University, to make the business of healthcare a much more prominent focus at Carey. It just makes sense organically, given the groundwork we?ve already laid in this area of study and our ties to a university world-famous for its medical care and training.?

The new focus includes an increase in cooperative research and teaching efforts with other divisions of Johns Hopkins, particularly its renowned schools of medicine, public health, nursing, and engineering. To date, about 10 professors from those schools have been jointly appointed to the Carey faculty. In addition, Carey faculty members have begun working with professors from the other Johns Hopkins divisions to explore joint research efforts, which could include the involvement of Carey students. Also, Carey and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine plan to launch a dual MBA/MD degree program in fall 2012.

Gordon concurs with Phan that the Carey School?s focus on healthcare and the life sciences would appeal to any student of the modern business landscape, adding that it?s also a natural for current healthcare and life sciences professionals seeking a deeper understanding of their industry.

?Students coming to Carey will not only receive an excellent business education, but they?ll also be able to tap into the many resources available throughout the great research enterprise of Johns Hopkins University,? said Gordon. ?On top of that, Baltimore is an amazing place to study health care, from the unmet needs in public health at one extreme to the very vibrant high-tech community at the other.?

Metropolitan Family Services Awarded Two Competitive Head Start Grants for DuPage County, Illinois

Wheaton, IL (PRWEB) May 01, 2012

Metropolitan Family Services, a leading provider of human services to low-income families, has been awarded two competitive grants to provide Head Start services in DuPage. The Office of Head Start, within the Administration of Children and Families of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, granted Metropolitan DuPage $ 4,673,754 for Head Start 3-5 year-old preschool programming and $ 1,194,021 for Early Head Start programs serving children ages 0-3 years throughout DuPage.

Head Start and Early Head Start will provide preschool programming to more than 600 children who have economic, developmental or other disadvantages that could threaten their future school success. The programs will serve children who live throughout DuPage County with centers being located in the communities of Addison, Bensenville, Carol Stream, Naperville, Villa Park, Warrenville, West Chicago, Burr Ridge, Wood Dale and a community still to be determined in South Central DuPage.

Metropolitan will partner with several area agencies and school districts to provide the Head Start programs, including Educare of West DuPage, Naperville Community School District 203, Bensenville School District 2, Burr Ridge Community Consolidated School District 180, Addison School District 4, Wheaton Warrenville School District 200, Villa Park School District 45, Wood Dale School District 7, Outreach Community Ministries Carol Stream Center and St. Andrew United Methodist Church Carol Stream Center. Numerous human service and civic leaders have endorsed the transition, including U.S. Representatives Randall Hultgren, Judy Biggert and Peter Roskam.

Head Start services for these communities previously were provided by Lifelink Corporation and the Community Development Institute. Metropolitan will work closely with the current provider and the families to ensure continuity for children, parents and educators.

?Metropolitan is excited to be awarded these grants to provide early childhood education for low-income children throughout DuPage County,? said Ric Estrada, President and CEO of Metropolitan Family Services. ?Because our mission centers around strengthening families, the development and education needs of children are a clear focus of our services. Our experience providing quality Head Start programming dates back to 1995, with the opening of our first Head Start facility.?

?Today, we operate three Head Start Centers in Chicago that are fully accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children that have excellent performance ? 9 in 10 of our 3-4 year olds meet developmental norms across the board,? Estrada remarked. ?The addition of these Head Start services in DuPage aligns perfectly with our core programming for early childhood learning.?

?It?s good to know that our DuPage Head Start program will be in such caring hands,? said U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-IL-13), a former school board president and senior member of the House Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education. ?Years ago, I volunteered with Chicago?s first Head Start program at Hull House, and it was so clear what a huge difference early learning can make in a child?s life. With leadership from Metropolitan Family Services, our Head Start and Early Head Start programs will provide kids in DuPage, especially in under-served households, with an early and effective push towards a brighter future.?

Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children with educational, health, nutritional, social and other services. The Metropolitan Family Services DuPage Head Start programs will provide a combination of center-, school-, and home-based early childhood education services.

?We know the difference quality early learning makes in children?s lives and use proven, evidence-based curricula to ensure they can succeed,? said Theresa Nihill, Executive Director of Metropolitan Family Services DuPage. ?And by collaborating with Educare, school districts and many other community partners, we will provide an experience that prepares children for success physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.?

Key findings of a community assessment conducted by Metropolitan, using multiple data sources, show a substantial increase in need for Early Head Start and Head Start services across DuPage County. Even as the overall 0-5 population decreased slightly, the number of young children living in poverty has more than doubled during the past decade, from 2,379 to 5,288.

As a result of the needs assessment it conducted, over the summer Metropolitan will adjust the program delivery to focus on the communities mentioned above. Four existing sites will be closed, with children from these areas to be served by centers closer to their neighborhood or in their homes.

Because DuPage is a large, geographically dispersed county, understanding where the pockets of poverty lie is extremely important. Metropolitan Family Services DuPage has been actively serving the DuPage area?s most vulnerable residents for more than 80 years. It is this foundation and history that uniquely positions the organization to best serve families of DuPage.

Note: Total Head Start funding totals $ 5.4 million; of that $ 1.1 million (20 percent) comes from nongovernmental sources. Total Early Head Start funding totals $ 1.3 million; of that more than $ 266,000 (20 percent) comes from nongovernmental sources.

Air Purifiers Direct 2U Announces Business Details and Top Selling Air Purifiers for 2007

Plainfield, IL (PRWEB) January 31, 2008

Air Purifiers Direct 2U has come a long way since its inception in 2006 and then the full-scale launch of their website in January of 2007. “The early part of 2007 was a very trying time for our business. We, my wife and I, were starting a brand new business venture on the web while going through the growing pains of running a small business and driving traffic to our new website,” said Bill Unyi, Founder and President of Air Purifiers Direct 2U. Unyi also adds, “To top things off, our son was starting pre-school and we were trying to have a second child. That’s a lot to jam into one year, but we made it and our perseverance has paid off. We showed a profit in 2007 and are expecting our second child in August of 2008.”

Throughout 2007, their Air Purifier Superstore grew by leaps and bounds, but the customers shopping on their website were always first and foremost in their minds when shaping and molding their website, as well as fielding customer questions related to their products. “Our main goal for the website, other than profitability, was to ensure that our customers were getting honest opinions and an education while shopping for air purifiers on our website or throughout the web,” Unyi states. “There is a ton of information for customers to sift through when making an air purifier buying decision. We try to simplify the process by offering all the information they need on our website in order for them to make an educated decision.” Unyi also adds, “Being a small business on the web has its advantages for customers shopping our site. When they call our customer service number, they are always getting the owners of the company. We can give each customer the personalized attention that they need and deserve.”

That personalized customer service paid off for them in 2007 and now they have the ability to share their List of Top Selling Air Purifiers for 2007.

Unyi states, “Head and shoulders above the rest of their product offerings, Austin Air Purifiers were a consistent best seller. The Austin HealthMate Standard and Junior Models have enough filtering and cleaning power to fit anyone’s air purification needs. The Standard HealthMate Model covers 1500 sqft. while the Junior Model covers 700 sqft. Both contain HEPA and Carbon filters, are constructed of steel, and made right here in the USA. For the price these are the best HEPA and Carbon air purifiers that we offer on our site.”

“Coming in at a close second were our Rabbit Air Purifiers,” Unyi adds. “We added them mid-year and they were a hit almost from the start. Rabbit Air does a great job promoting their product and that makes for an easy sale by the time customers visit our site. The Rabbit Air Purifiers are a great everyday-use air purifier for the price. They are very durable and our customers can’t say enough about how much they love them.”

Unyi shares, “Finally, our offerings from Airfree Air Sterilizers, HealthWay Air Purifiers, and NQ Clarifier Air Purifiers fit a niche for our customers throughout the year. These units are some of the best that we offer on our site and fit a specific need for certain customers. These units are for those customers that are looking for the best in air purification and air sterilization. They are the workhorses on our team of air purifiers and can handle anything you throw at them.” Unyi concludes, “These final air purifiers may be on the pricy side, but they are worth every penny for the work they do to clean the air in a home or office.”

Air Purifiers Direct 2U offers an array of air purifier and air cleaner products to meet anyone’s budget and needs.
